Fix Ben first. Who must live beside him?

Answer and reasoning

Left to right: Ben → Mia → Ava.

Ben is in house 1. Mia must be beside Ben, so Mia takes house 2. Ava takes the remaining house 3.

Garden Club

Medium · 4 houses · 3 clues

Four neighbors are planning a garden tour. Work out the route along their street. The neighbors are Mia, Ben, Ava, Leo. Each occupies one different house.

  1. Ava lives in house 1 from the left.
  2. There is one house between Ava and Leo.
  3. Mia lives to the left of Ben.

Reveal a hint

The one-house gap fixes Leo before you compare Mia and Ben.

Answer and reasoning

Left to right: Ava → Mia → Leo → Ben.

Ava is in house 1. One house between Ava and Leo puts Leo in house 3. Houses 2 and 4 remain. Mia is left of Ben, so Mia takes 2 and Ben takes 4.

Midnight Library

Hard · 5 houses · 5 clues

Five neighbors are returning mystery books. Reconstruct their homes using all five clues. The neighbors are Mia, Ben, Ava, Leo, Kai. Each occupies one different house.

  1. Kai lives in house 3 from the left.
  2. Ben and Kai are next-door neighbors.
  3. There is one house between Ben and Mia.
  4. Leo and Ben are next-door neighbors.
  5. Mia lives to the left of Ava.

Reveal a hint

Try Ben on either side of Kai. Use Leo next to Ben, then check which side leaves a house for Ava.

Answer and reasoning

Left to right: Leo → Ben → Kai → Mia → Ava.

Kai is in house 3. Ben is next to Kai, so Ben is in 2 or 4. If Ben were in 4, Mia would have to be in 2; Leo would be in 5 because Kai occupies 3. Only house 1 remains for Ava, contradicting Ava being right of Mia. Therefore Ben is in 2, Mia in 4, Leo in 1 and Ava in 5.

How to solve an ordering puzzle

Start with a fixed house. Translate “next door” into a distance of one and “one house between” into a distance of two. “Left of” does not mean immediately beside. Test both directions of a neighbor clue and reject any branch that leaves a person with no legal position.
